Connect to Amnezia services or create your own private VPN in just a few steps. It uses AmneziaWG, a fork of WireGuard-Go, that removes the identifiable network signatures that make WireGuard easily detectable by Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) systems, making it more stealth.

Overview

Amnezia VPN is an open-source privacy project that emerged from a 2020 hackathon and has since matured into a multi-tier service for users seeking internet freedom without identity verification. The platform offers three distinct paths: Amnezia Premium, a conventional subscription VPN with 20 country locations and unlimited bandwidth; Amnezia Free, a zero-cost tier with speed-capped access to popular blocked sites; and Amnezia Self-hosted, which turns any rented VPS into a personal VPN node. All tiers run through the same open client, and none require account creation or email registration. The project is operated by EuphoriaTech Limited, registered in Cyprus, and has undergone independent security audits by 7ASecurity in 2022, 2024, and 2025.

What distinguishes Amnezia from typical no-KYC competitors is its protocol-level focus on censorship resistance. Rather than merely offering standard OpenVPN or WireGuard connections, the team developed AmneziaWG, a fork of WireGuard-Go that strips away the identifiable packet signatures that deep-packet inspection systems use to detect and throttle WireGuard traffic. This makes the service particularly relevant for users in regions with aggressive network filtering.

Privacy & KYC

Amnezia sits at KYC Tier L1 — Anonymous. There is no signup flow, no email gate, and no identity verification for any tier. For self-hosted deployments, the project states that no user or server data is collected; connection credentials remain local to the device and are never transmitted to Amnezia infrastructure. This claim is auditable because the entire client codebase is open source.

  • Managed services: Amnezia Free and Amnezia Premium do collect minimal operational data required for VPN functionality, though the exact retention scope is not specified in public documentation.
  • IP logging: The authoritative data flags IP logging as present, which likely applies to the managed tiers rather than self-hosted nodes.
  • Email: Not required for any tier.
  • Audits: Three consecutive security audits by 7ASecurity provide external validation that the client and protocol implementations meet baseline security standards.

The privacy score of 69/100 reflects this mixed model: exemplary anonymity for self-hosted users, but somewhat less transparency around logging on the managed tiers where the user must trust Amnezia's infrastructure.

Supported assets & payments

Amnezia Premium accepts Bitcoin alongside fiat payment methods, making it one of the few VPN services that genuinely supports pseudonymous subscription renewals without linking to a bank account or card. The free tier requires no payment at all, and self-hosted users pay only their VPS provider. There is no native token or complicated in-app economy—just straightforward pricing at roughly $4.00 per month for Premium, with occasional promotions such as a 50% discount for users switching from competing VPNs that have stopped working in censored regions.

Security & custody

Security architecture varies by deployment mode. Self-hosted users retain full custody of their private keys and server configuration; Amnezia merely provides the open-source installer and client. This is the strongest privacy posture available. Premium and Free users delegate tunnel security to Amnezia's managed servers, which support up to seven simultaneous device connections and include router and Android TV compatibility.

The client supports eight protocols: OpenVPN, OpenVPN over Cloak, WireGuard, AmneziaWG, IKEv2, XRay Reality, and ShadowSocks. For censorship-heavy environments, the documentation recommends pairing AmneziaWG or XRay with KillSwitch, AmneziaDNS, and split tunneling to isolate sensitive traffic. AmneziaWG 2.0, released as an update, advances the obfuscation layer further against evolving DPI techniques without sacrificing WireGuard's performance advantages.

Who it's for — verdict

Amnezia VPN earns its 7/10 overall score by serving two very different audiences well. Technical users who want sovereign, anonymous infrastructure will find the self-hosted tier unmatched at its price point—free software, Bitcoin-optional VPS rentals elsewhere, and zero trust placed in a VPN company's logging policy. Casual users in censored regions benefit from the managed tiers' out-of-box functionality and AmneziaWG's stealth characteristics, though they must accept a modest privacy trade-off.

The trust score of 71/100 and the Cyprus corporate structure are reasonable for a project with published audit history, but users prioritizing maximum anonymity should default to self-hosting. Amnezia is not the fastest premium VPN on the market, nor the cheapest, but its no-KYC stance, open-source transparency, and protocol-level anti-censorship engineering make it a standout for privacy-conscious crypto users and journalists operating under restrictive network conditions.
